TOY THE WILLO/ENERGY

East London's Toy have always had a penchant for motorik beats and hypnotic riffs and their appropriately-titled comeback track 'Energy' is no exception. Serving as one half of a double a-side release on Tough Love Records, 'Energy' is a rampant krautrock jam with sinister post-punk undertones. If you close your eyes and picture a dark room filled with members of CAN, Gang of Four and Bo Ningen simultaneously wigging out, you'd probably end up with something similar as angular guitars scratch their way through an undercurrent of pounding bass and relentless drumming. 'The Willo', however, takes an entirely different approach, focussing on a gentle vocal melody backed by a reverb-soaked drum machine, Spaghetti Western-inspired guitar licks and warm analogue synthesizers that nod to Tom Waits' 'A Jockey Full of Bourbon', made famous by the Channel 4 series Black Books. With only 300 copies available, it might be wise to pre-order it here now. -Holly Mullineaux
